Essential Grammar

  1. Use of Passive Voice:

    • Academic writing often involves the use of the passive voice. It is particularly useful when describing processes, as the emphasis is on the actions rather than the people or things performing them.

    • Example: "The raw materials are collected and then processed in the factory."

  2. Time-Order Words:

    • Utilize appropriate sequencing words to indicate the order of the steps in the process. This helps to create a clear and logical flow in your description.

    • Example: "Firstly, secondly, next, then, finally, afterward."

  3. Range of Present Verb Tenses:

    • Display a range of verb tense forms, especially when describing different stages of a process. Present Simple and Present Perfect.

    • Example: "The product is first designed, then it is manufactured. After it has been manufactured, it is packaged."

  4. Subject-Verb Agreement:

    • Ensure that subjects and verbs agree in number, especially when dealing with multiple stages or components in a process.

    • Example: "The ingredients are mixed, and the mixture is poured into the mold."

  5. Use of Articles:

    • Pay attention to the use of articles (a, an, the). Be specific about the items in the process.

    • Example: "A conveyor belt transports the finished products to the packaging area."

  6. Prepositions:

    • Use prepositions accurately, especially when describing the location or movement of items in the process.

    • Example: "The materials are fed into the machine for processing."

  7. Complex Sentence Structures:

    • Aim for complexity in sentence structures by incorporating relative clauses and other advanced grammatical structures.

    • Example: "The machine, which was recently upgraded, processes the raw materials more efficiently."

  8. Cohesive Devices:

    • Use cohesive devices to connect ideas within and between sentences. This enhances the coherence of your writing.

    • Example: "In addition to this, furthermore, moreover, on the other hand."

  9. Appropriate Vocabulary for the diagram, and Terminology for the topic:

    • Choose precise and varied vocabulary to describe each step in the process accurately.

    • Example: Instead of repeatedly using "then," consider using alternatives like "subsequently" or "following that."
