Episode: 1 of 3
IELTS Speaking is the third part of the IELTS test and assesses your spoken English proficiency. It's the same Speaking test for IELTS Academic and IELTS General. It's a face-to-face interview with an examiner, typically lasting between 11-14 minutes.
The Speaking test is divided into three parts:
-
Part 1 (Introduction & Interview): This introductory section (4-5 minutes) focuses on familiar topics like yourself, your background, your hobbies, and interests. It's a relaxed conversation to warm you up and get you speaking English comfortably. It has both personal question and random questions.
-
Part 2 (Individual Long Turn): You'll be given a cue card with a topic (e.g., describe a memorable place you visited). You'll have one minute to prepare yourself, and then you'll speak for 1-2 minutes about the topic on the card.
-
Part 3 (Discussion): Here, the examiner will follow up on the topic from Part 2, prompting you to discuss it in more detail and express your opinions and ideas (4-5 minutes). This part assesses your ability to develop your thoughts and participate in an extended discussion.
Here are some specific tips for IELTS Speaking Part 1:
-
Speak clearly and confidently: Project your voice and enunciate your words.
-
Show interest and enthusiasm: Be engaged in the conversation and respond with more than one-word answers.
-
Use a variety of vocabulary and grammar: Demonstrate your range of English skills beyond basic phrases.
-
Listen carefully to the examiner's questions: Respond directly to what is asked and avoid going off on tangents.
Knowing some common Part 1 topics can help you prepare:
-
Your family and background
-
Your work or studies
-

-
Your hometown or where you live
-
