Here are some ways to rephrase the prompt to address both sides:

  • Evaluate the potential benefits and drawbacks of ...

  • Critically examine the impact of ... considering both its positive and negative aspects.

  • Discuss whether ... is a welcome trend or a cause for concern.

Discussing Positive Developments:

  • Use vocabulary that emphasizes advantages: "benefits," "opportunities," "improvements," "advancements"

  • Use verbs that show positive outcomes: "enhances," "facilitates," "promotes," "streamlines"

Discussing Negative Developments:

  • Use vocabulary that highlights drawbacks: "challenges," "threats," "drawbacks," "limitations"

  • Use verbs that show negative consequences: "hinders," "impedes," "exacerbates," "jeopardizes"

Taking a Stance (Give a clear opinion)

While acknowledging both sides, IELTS essays often require you to take a stance. Here's how to do that:

  • Overall, the advantages of ... seem to outweigh the disadvantages. (positive stance)

  • While there are clear benefits, the potential drawbacks of ... should not be ignored. (balanced stance)

  • On balance, the negative consequences of ... appear to be more significant. (negative stance)

Word Choice:

Here are some specific word choices to replace "positive" and "negative":

  • Positive:  advantageous, beneficial, constructive, fruitful, promising

  • Negative:  detrimental, disadvantageous, problematic, troublesome, concerning

Remember:

  • Maintain a formal tone throughout the essay.

  • Use strong verbs and impactful nouns.

  • Support your arguments with evidence and examples.
