Essential Grammar
Subject-Verb Agreement & Pronouns
In a sentence, the subject and the verb must agree in number (singular or plural). If the subject is singular, the verb should be singular, and if the subject is plural, the verb should be plural.

Example 1 (Singular):

Christchurch is a beautiful city in New Zealand.

Here, "Christchurch" is the singular subject, and "is" is the singular form of the verb.

The earthquakes in Christchurch were devastating.

In this case, "earthquakes" is the plural subject, and "were" is the plural form of the verb.

Pronouns: Pronouns are words that replace nouns to avoid repetition. It's important to use pronouns that agree with the noun they replace in terms of gender and number.

Example 3 (Pronouns - Singular):

Christchurch is known for its resilience. The city has faced challenges, but it has always recovered.

In this example, "it" is a singular pronoun replacing the singular noun "Christchurch."

"For me, a map on the phone tends to be more practical in most situations because it's portable, and it has real-time updates, and accessibility to various features like GPS."

"Not always. I find using a map helpful initially to get a sense of the city's layout though I often prefer to explore freely and relying on landmarks and asking locals for directions because it helps me dive into the local culture and discover hidden places."

"Yes, I find it very easy to read maps. I enjoy understanding the layout of different places and using maps helps me to grasp directions efficiently even though I sometimes encounter challenges with intricate city maps due to the abundance of details, but overall, I find them manageable."
