In this lesson, Kru. Jaem introduces IELTS Essay Writing and welcomes new learners to the IELTS Live Online programme. IELTS Essays (Writing Task 2) is the same for both Academic and General Training modules. In this task, test-takers are presented with a point of view, argument, or problem, and they are required to write an essay in response. The essay should present a well-structured argument, express ideas logically, and use a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures.

Essential Points

Key points to remember for IELTS essay writing:

  1. Time Management: Allocate your time wisely between Task 1 and Task 2. Task 2 carries more weight and is recommended to spend around 40 minutes on it.

  2. Word Count: Task 1 usually requires at least 150 words, while Task 2 requires a minimum of 250 words.

  3. Planning: Spend a few minutes planning your essay. Consider the structure, main ideas, and supporting details.

  4. Coherence and Cohesion: Ensure that your essay has a clear introduction, body paragraphs with supporting evidence, and a conclusion. Use cohesive devices to link ideas.

  5. Grammar and Vocabulary: Demonstrate a good command of English grammar and a varied vocabulary. Avoid repetitive language.

  6. Task Response: Address the task fully. Make sure your essay directly responds to the prompt or question provided.

  7. Practice: Practice writing essays on various topics to improve your skills and familiarize yourself with different question types.
